D2 STEEL VS H13 STEEL

D2 steel is an air-hardened, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. it has high wear resistance, it can be heat treated and the hardness range is 55-62HRC, can be processed in the annealed state. D2 steel hardly deforms when hardened properly. High Cr content of D2 steel makes it has slightly corrosion resistance in the hardened state.

H13 Steel مقدمة

H13 tool steel is a kind of widely used Cr-Mo hot work steel, widely used in hot-work and cold-work molds. The thermal strength of H13 steel can resist thermal fatigue cracking due to cyclic heating and cooling cycles in hot-work mold applications. Due to its excellent combination of high toughness and high thermal fatigue cracking resistance, H13 steel is more suitable for hot work mold application than any other tool steel.

Features

D2 steel is a kind of high carbon, high chromium cold mold steel, its features are as follows:

High wear resistance

Good hardness and edge retention

The hardness can reach to 55-62HRC after heat treatment

With proper corrosion resistance, but its not stainless steel

Suitable to manufacture cold work mold, cutting tools, stamping and forming tools etc.

H13 steel is a chromium- molybdenum based hot work mold steel, its features are as follows:

Good heat resistance and wear resistance

High toughness and ductility

Suitable for high temperature working environment, such as hot forging, die casting and extrusion etc.

Possessing high strength and hardness after heat treatment

Suitable for manufacturing injection mold, hot extrusion mold and hot forging mold

Difference between D2 steel and H13 steel

4340 Chemical Composition

The main difference between D2 and H13 is their chemical components and application scenario. D2 steel is a kind of high carbon, high chromium cold mold steel, obtain excellent wear resistance and hardness, suitable for manufacturing cold work mold and tools. Whereas H13 is a kind of hot work mold steel, containing Cr, Mo, Si, V and other alloy elements, obtain good thermal stability and thermal cracking resistance, suitable for manufacturing hot work mold and die casting mold. In short, D2 steel is suitable for cold work application, H13 steel is suitable for hot work application.

How to choose?

When choosing D2 steel and H13 steel, we need to consider some aspects as below:

D2 steel: High carbon, high Cr alloy tool steel, with excellent wear resistance and hardness, suitable for making cold work molds and tools, such as stamping mold, cutting tools etc. The hardness of D2 steel could reach to 55-62 HRC after heat treatment, but the toughness is lower than H13 steel.

H13 steel: Cr-Mo based hot work steel, with good thermal stability and thermal cracking resistance, suitable for making hot work mold and tools, such as: Die casting molds, hot extrusion mold etc. The hardness of H13 steel is normally at 48-52 HRC after heat treatment, the toughness and ductility of H13 is better than D2 steel.

Conclusion:D2 STEEL VS H13 STEEL

If the application scenario requires high wear resistance and hardness, choose D2 steel; if the application scenario is under high temperature environment and requires good toughness, H13 will be a better choice.
