410 Steel Einführung

410 STEEL VS 410 STEEL
alloy steel bars

The carbon content of 410 steel is 0.08%-0.15%,manganese content is ≤1.0%,silicon content is 1.0%,chromium content is 11.5%-13.5%,phosphorus content is ≤0.04%.

  • Weldability:The weldability of 410 stainless steel is very useful in any welding requirement.
  • Heat treatment:410 stainless steel can enhance its corrosion resistance and hardness by quenching and tempering process.

410S Steel Einführung

The carbon content of 410S steel is ≤0.15%,manganese content is ≤1.0%,silicon content is ≤0.6%,chromium content is 11.5%-14.5%, phosphorus content is ≤0.03%.

  • Corrosion Resistance:410S stainless steel has corrosion resistance in atmospheric condition, fresh water, gentle organic and inorganic acids, alkali and some chemicals. After appropriate cleaning, the condition of exposed chloride in daily activities usually is satisfying.
  • Antioxidant Properties:410S has good antioxidant properties. It can continue to use when the temperature up to 1300°F(705°C).It will over oxidation during intermittent use, when the temperature above 1500°F(811°C).

Chemische Zusammensetzung

The carbon content of 410S is lower than 410.The carbon content of 410S is under 0.08%,while the carbon content of 410is about 0.15%, thus 410S has better corrosion resistance. So 410S is a kind of steel grade which improve the corrosion resistance and formability of 410.

Common Features

C1045 Steel Properties
  • They all have certain corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing media. The corrosion resistance comes from dense chromium oxide film that chromium forms on the surface of stainless steel.
  • They all can be processed by regular mechanical method,,such as cutting, drilling, bending and welding.
  • They all suitable for applications that require a certain strength and corrosion resistance.

The difference between 410 steel and 410S steel

  • 410 steel can enhance its hardness and strength by heat treatment(for example quenching and tempering). However 410S does not have the property of  hardness by heat treatment because of its low carbon content.
  • 410S is easier to forming and welding due to its low carbon content, especially in the application of complicate shapes or structure.
  • 410 usually has higher hardness and strength, but its toughness and malleability is a little lower compare to 410.

Application Comparison

Due to its high carbon content,410 can improve its hardness and strength by heat treatment, which makes it suitable for the application that request high wear resistance and high strength, such as knives manufacturing, pump and valve components, turbine blades, and applications of energy production. In addition ,it is also used for manufacturing hardware such as gun barrels ,screws, nuts, bolts and fasteners. Its magnetic properties and high strength makes it more suitable in certain situations.

Due to its low carbon content,410S does not have the properties of harden property by heat treatment, but it can maintain its good toughness and malleability under high temperature, which makes it will not easy crack during welding.Therefore,410S stainless steel is more suitable for the application of welding, such as oil refining and petrochemical process equipment, heat exchangers, mining machinery, annealing boxes, enclosures, quenching racks, gate valves and pressure plates. Its non-hardening properties is helpful for prevent alloy would harden of crack during high temperature or welding. This is an important considerations in the manufacture process.

How To Choose?

  • Welding requirements:If you need welding, and you do not want harden or crack during welding,410S will be a better choice.410S is easy to process during welding due to its low carbon content, and has better welding ability.
  • Heat treatment requirements:If you need enhance the hardness and strength by heat treatment,410 probably is a more suitable choice.410 can be harden by heat treatment. This is beneficial for manufacturing components such as knives, pumps and valves that require high wear resistance.
  • Cost consideration:Due to its special chemical composition,410S may be more expensive than 410.If cost is an important factor, and you do not require welding or high temperature property, then 410 could be a more economical choice.
  • Corrosion resistance:Although both of these two steels has good corrosion resistance,if the application environment is particular harsh, you may should consider the corrosion resistance of the material.Due to the low content of 410S,it may provide better corrosion resistance in some certain environment.
  • Mechanical properties:If you require components with high hardness and strength,410 would be more suitable, because it can improve these properties by heat treatment. But if you require better toughness and malleability, especially in high temperature application,410S will be more suitable.

Conclusion:410 STEEL VS 410 STEEL

410 steel and 410S steel both are high quality engineering materials, they have slight differences in chemical composition and mechanical properties.410 stainless steel is suitable for the application that require heat treatment to improve its properties.410S stainless steel is more suitable for the application of welding and high temperature, maintaining its toughness and malleability is the key part. When choosing these two materials, we should determine according to the specific application requirement and property requirement.Whether in the design period of new product or the maintenance and upgrade of equipment we already have.Selecting and applying properly of both 410 steel and 410S steel is helpful for improving durability, reliability and economy of product. We can ensure the equipment keep its good properties by optimizing material selection during its expected service life, and reduce maintaining costs and extend replacement cycles at the same time.
