Einführung

H13 steel
H13 steel is a hot working mold steel with high properties,it is known for its excellent toughness, hot and cold fatigue performance and high temperature strength. It has appropriate content of alloying elements such as carbon, chromium, molybdenum, silicon and Vanadium, with the mixing of these elements, improves the strength, hardness, wear resistance and antioxidant properties.H13 steel mainly applied for manufacturing molds with the working temperature below 600℃,such as forging dies, hot extrusion dies, refining forging dies, and aluminum, copper and other alloys. The process parameters should be strictly controlled during forging process to avoid cracks. In general,H13 steel is an important mold steel materials, which has wide application in industrial production.
304 stainless steel
304 stainless steel, also known 18/8 stainless steel, the name came after its content 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It has excellent processing properties and toughness, and can withstand hot rolling, cold rolling and other processing methods, and is easy to plastic processing. The welding properties of 304 stainless steel is also excellent and is suitable for various welding operations. The most important is 304 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance at room temperature,it can resist corrosion from kinds of chemical s,such as acid,alkali,salt,etc.Therefore,304 stainless steel has widely application in food processing, chemical equipment, construction decoration and other fields. It is a high properties,multi-purpose stainless material.

The comparison between H13 and 304 steel

H13 and 304 steel have their own characteristics in material science and engineering applications. There are obvious differences in chemical composition, properties and application fields.
H13 steel is a hot working mold steel,it has appropriate contents of elements such as carbon, chromium, molybdenum, silicon and vanadium. This steel is known for its high strength, high hardness and excellent heat resistance, and it can maintain stable mechanical properties and thermal fatigue resistance in high temperature- environments.H13 steel has a wide hardness range, its hardness usually can reach 48-52 HRC,and some high performance products can even reach higher hardness. This steel is particularly suitable for manufacturing molds with working temperatures below 600℃,such as hot forging molds, hot extrusion molds,die-casting molds, etc.as well as tools and components need to withstand high temperature and high pressure.
In contrast,304 steel is an austenitic stainless steel composed mainly of chromium and nickel, and also with small amounts of carbon, silicon, manganese and other elements. This steel is popular for its excellent corrosion resistance, good processing properties and welding properties.304 steel has good toughness and ductility at room temperature, and can resist corrosion from various chemical substances, such as acids, alkalis, salts, etc. Therefore,it is widely used in food processing equipment, chemical containers, architectural decoration and other fields,as well as other occasions that require corrosion resistance and aesthetics.
However, compare to H13 steel, the hardness and wear resistance of 304 steel is lower, which is not suitable for occasions that require high hardness and high wear resistance.Meantime, the hardness and thermal resistance of 304 steel are not as good as H13 steel,so it is not suitable for manufacture high temperature molds and tools.
FAQ:H13 and 304 Stainless Steel
What’s the main difference between H13 steel and 304 steel in chemical composition?
H13 steel is a hot working mold steel, its main alloy elements include carbon(moderate content to ensure its strength and hardness),chromium(provide heat and corrosion resistance),molybdenum(improve heat resistance and redrigidity),silicon(enhance oxidation resistance and hear resistance),and vanadium(refine grains and improve toughness). This composition design gives H13 steel excellent strength and hardness at high temperature, and maintaining good thermal fatigue resistance.
304 steel is an austenitic stainless steel, its main alloy elements are chromium(about 18%) and nickel(about 8%),with these two elements working together gives 304 steel excellent corrosion resistance. In addition,it also contains a small amount of carbon, silicon, molybdenum and other elements, but the overall content and types of alloy elements are significantly different from H13 steel. The chromium content of 304 steel is much higher than that of H13 steel, but the elements such as molybdenum and vanadium that can improve the heat resistance is relatively low.
What’s the main difference between H13 steel and 304 steel in properties?
Hardness and wear resistance:
After heat treatment, the hardness of H13 steel can reach 48-52 HRC,some high performance products can even reach higher levels. This steel has high hardness and wear resistance, which can withstand high temperature and high pressure working environment.is an ideal material for manufacturing hot working molds.
The hardness of 304 steel is relatively low,its main advantages are corrosion resistance and processing performance.Although it has a certain hardness, compared to H13 steel ,it is more suitable for the occasion that require corrosion resistance and aesthetics, rather than bear high hardness and high abrasion environment.
Heat resistance:
H13 steel is known for its excellent heat resistance and is able to maintain stable mechanical properties and thermal fatigue resistance at high temperatures, which makes it particularly suitable for making molds and tools at high temperature.
In contrast, the heat resistance of 304 steel is lower, although it has good corrosion resistance at room temperature, its strength and hardness will decrease at high temperatures. Therefore,it is not suitable for the molds and tools that require to withstand high temperatures.
