1.2379,also known as D2,which is a high carbon and high chromium alloy tool steel with high hardness and wear resistance. It contains molybdenum and vanadium, which makes it extremely good in terms of wear resistance. After heat treatment,1.2379 get the features of strong hardenability and good stability of dimension, which is suitable for manufacture large and complex cold working mold require high wear resistance.
1.2080,corresponding to the AISI D3 steel of America, which is a high carbon and high chromium cold working mold steel with high hardness and high wear resistance.Compare with 1.2379,the wear resistance and compressive strength is slightly lower, but more cost-effective.
1.2379 Chemical Composition
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Mo | V |
| 1.45-1.60% | 0.10 – 0.60% | 0.20-0.60% | ≤0.030% | ≤0.030% | 11.0 – 13.0% | 0.70-1.00% | 0.70-1.00% |
1.2080 Chemical Composition
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr |
| 1.90-2.20% | 0.10-0.60% | 0.20-0.60% | ≤0.030% | ≤0.030% | 11.0-13.0% |
Comparison between 1.2379 steel and 1.2080 steel
Common features
- High wear resistance:Both two steels have good wear resistance due to their high contents of carbon and chromium, which is suitable for the application scenarios require to bear high abrasion.
- Strong Hardenability:Both two steels have good hardenability, which means they can obtain evenly hardness and wear resistance during quenching process.
- Good stability of dimension:After heat treatment,1.2379 and 1.2080 are both can maintain good dimensional stability, which is important to precision molds and tools.
- Good compressive strength:Both of two steel have high compressive strength, which makes them can bear high pressure without deformation.
Differences
1.2379 contains molybdenum(Mo) and vanadium(V),which increase its wear resistance and compressive strength.Although 1.2080 also contains vanadium while without molybdenum.
Due to 1.2379 contains molybdenum and vanadium, shows its higher wear resistance and compressive strength, and maintains good toughness and resistance to temper softening.Although 1.2080 has slightly lower wear resistance and compressive strength, the cost-effective may be better, and still remains good wear resistance and hardness.
Application Scenario

The application scenario of 1.2379 steel(D2 steel)
- Cold working molds:Used for manufacturing cold extrusion mold with high wear resistance, drawing mold, etc.
- Stamping molds:Suitable for high speed blanking molds and precision stamping molds for silicon steel sheets.
- Shearing tools:Used for manufacturing efficient scissors and deep drawing molds.
- Embossing molds and cold forging molds:Suitable for embossing molds and cold forging molds.
- Heavy-duty stamping molds:Suitable for heavy-duty stamping molds and cold shear blades.
The application scenario of 1.2080 steel(D3 steel)
- Bending, forming, drawing:Used for various bending, forming and drawing processes.
Forming rollers:Suitable for tubes and profile forming rollers.
- Forming molds:Used for forming molds such as ceramics, bricks, plastics and other materials.
- High-load tools:Suitable for tools with high loads and high friction, such as thread rolling molds and cold forging molds.
How to choose?
Wear resistance and compressive strength:
If extremely high wear resistance and compressive strength are required, choose 1.2379.
If cost is more important and do not require high wear resistance, choose 1.2080.
- Hardness and wear resistance:
1.2379 has high hardness, which is suitable for molds using for a long time.
1.2080 has slightly lower wear resistance, which is suitable for the scenario that do not have high requirements.
- Cost:
When the budget is limited,1.2080 is more economical.
When the budget is enough and require high properties,1.2379 is more suitable.
- Difficulty of processing:
1.2379 is more difficult to process, and suitable for complex molds.
1.2080 is easier to process, and suitable for the project that sensitive from cost and time.
- Corrosion resistance:
If you need better corrosion resistance,1.2379 is a better choice.
Conclusion:1.2379 and 1.2080 steel
Both of 1.2379 and 1.2080 steel are excellent cold working mold steel, but they still differ in chemical composition and properties.1.2379 provide higher wear resistance and compressive strength, while 1.2080 is more cost-effective.Engineers and designers should choose the most suitable materials based on the specific application requirements and budget limit.
PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES
- How is the hardness after heat treatment?
Both of 1.2379 and 1.2080 can reach a high hardness after heat treatment, usually at the range of 58-63HRC.
- How is the corrosion resistance of both two steels?
Due to the high content of chromium, both of these two steels have good corrosion resistance. But 1.2379 has molybdenum, its corrosion resistance is better than 1.2080.
- How is the processing difficulty?
Both of two steels are high carbon and high chromium, which relatively difficult to process, and need use suitable tools and processes.
